Councillor Steven Martins

Councillor Steven Martins was elected to the New Bedford City Council on November 6, 2007 and was his first run in public office. He is one of the youngest City Councillors ever elected in New Bedford's history. Steve, a life long resident of New Bedford, is the son of Portuguese immigrants who relocated to the United States from Lisbon, Portugal. He was educated at Saint Anthony Elementary School and graduated from New Bedford High School. He attended Bristol Community College and went onto to the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth where he earned his Bachelors Degree in Political Science. Steve is also a graduate of the New Bedford Citizen's Police Academy and plans to further his education and become a candidate for his Masters Degree.

In addition to his Council duties, he currently serves as an Employment and Training Specialist for the youth for New Directions Southcoast at the Greater New Bedford Career Center. Prior to his services as a Specialist, he also served as an Instructor for the Mayor's Summer Youth Program, Substitute Teacher for New Bedford Public Schools, Intern at the Bristol County District Attorney's office, and a Teacher's Assistant to the Political Science department at UMASS Dartmouth.

Councillor Martins is an active member in several local community organizations. Steve is currently a member of the Bullard Street Neighborhood Association, WIB Youth Council member, Democratic City Committee, City Council representative to the Mayor's Youth Council, and serves on numerous City Council committees'. Prior to his involvement, he has also served as Vice President of the Student Senate, member of the Campus Activities Board and University Conduct Board, and an Orientation Leader to the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth. He is also a volunteer for Operation Clean Sweep, Relay for Life, The Jimmy Fund, and Habitat for Humanity.

COMMITTEE MEMBERSHIPS: Appointments and Briefings, Finance, Internal Affairs, Labor and Industry, Ordinances, and Public Safety & Neighborhoods.

Member of the following Special Committees: Chairman of the Memorials and Dedications, Vice-Chairman of the Airport, and member of the Environmental Affairs; Assigned as the City Council Representative to the Traffic Commission and the Exhibition Hall Committee.
