The New Bedford
Historical Commission (NBHC) was established in 1972 and plays a key role in
the city's historic preservation efforts. The NBHC consists of seven members
and seven alternates appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the City Council.
The responsibilities of the NBHC are to:

Serve as the historic
district commission, responsible for design review for the exteriors of all of
the properties located within the Bedford Landing-Waterfront Historic District.
The District has boundaries that are contiguous with New Bedford Whaling
National Historical Park. |

Administer the city's
Demolition Ordinance, advising the City Council and other city agencies on the
historical significance of sites and buildings proposed for demolition
throughout the city. |

Maintain, update and
make available to the public the inventory of historic districts, buildings and
other sites throughout the city. |

Cooperate with and
advise the planning department, planning board, redevelopment authority and
other city, state and federal agencies and departments in matters involving
historic sites, buildings and structures. |

Advise and assist owners
of historic buildings in the city, providing sound and reliable information for
the treatment and care of historic properties. |
