The New Bedford Police Department was officially established
in 1847, the same year that the City of New Bedford was incorporated. Prior to
this there were several police agencies, which saw to the security of the town
of New Bedford, and "Old Dartmouth". One of these agencies was called
the Night Watch. The duties of the Night Watch was to patrol the business
district of New Bedford, keeping an eye out for any unsavory character. As the
city grew, so did the need for a more organized police force.Today, the New Bedford Police Department, operates from it's main
headquarters, located at 871 Rockdale Avenue with two substations: Station 2,
located in the south end of the City at 168 Cove Street and Station 3, located
in the north end of the City at 781 Ashley Blvd.Today`s Police Department operates on a $15 Million
Dollar annual budget. During the last year, the department has received and
answered 113,638 calls for service. |
