STREET PARKING GARAGE
Planning to visit New Bedford Whaling National
Historical Park and the New Bedford Whaling Museum? The Elm Street Garage is
located one block north of the National Park Visitor Center (at North Second
and William Streets) and two blocks from the Whaling Museum (at William Street
& Johnny Cake Hill). Parking at the Elm Street Garage via a nominal daily
fee. Monthly rates are also available. Vehicle height limit: 6'3". The Elm
Street garage also contains the offices of the New Bedford Traffic Commission,
which oversee traffic issues for city streets and parking programs. Directions
to Elm Street Parking Garage: From I-195, take Exit 15 (Route 18 South -
Downtown). Take RIGHT at the first traffic light. Garage is approx. 500 feet on
your RIGHT. |

CUSTOM HOUSE SQUARE PARKING LOT
The Custom House Square parking lot
accommodates 70 vehicles. It is located at the corner of William Street and
Acushnet Avenue, adjacent the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment
Plaza (the little park with the fountain and arbor). A "pay-and-display"
machine, located at the entrance to the lot, allows motorists to purchase a
parking slip and display it on the dashboard of their vehicle. Directions to
Custom House Square Parking Lot: From I-195, take Exit 15 (Route 18 South -
Downtown). Take RIGHT at the first traffic light. Proceed up Elm Street and
turn LEFT at fourth block (Acushnet Avenue). After proceeding straight through
the next intersection (William Street), turn LEFT onto Barker's Lane; Custom
House Square parking lot entrance is on your LEFT. Pay-and-display machine is
on your RIGHT (not in the green guard shed). National Park Visitor Center is
located diagonally across the street from the Custom House. |

METERED STREET PARKING
Throughout the central
business district (downtown), curbside parking is available for hourly-metered
parking for a nominal fee (follow instructions on the meter). |

THEATRE PARKING GARAGE
This new facility added 298 parking
spaces to the downtown and features retail space on the street level. Located
at 688 Purchase Street, vehicles have easy, direct access via the School Street
Exit off Route 18 South (just one block south of the Union Street
intersection). |
