New Bedford History / City Hall Elevator
Upon entering City Hall and continuing through the foyer, a visitor’s attention is immediately drawn to a custom-designed Otis elevator. This open-cage elevator originally cost $4,625 and remains the central feature of the main foyer and vestibule. The unique open elevator compartment, which affords passengers an airy 360° view, offers padded, seating for six. The doors feature an elaborate wrought iron bas-relief of the City Seal. Virtually unchanged except for certain electrical and safety improvements, the elevator must be controlled manually by a trained operator. It remains one of City Hall’s most popular features.
