The Jewish Federation of Greater New Bedford will be holding their annual observance for Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) on Sunday, May 1st at Buttonwood Park, at the Holocaust Memorial (corner of Hawthorne and Rockdale).

The memorial service begins at 6 p.m., followed by a candlelight procession to Tifereth Israel Congregation (145 Brownell Avenue, New Bedford). The program resumes at 7 p.m. at the synagogue with a tribute to Mary Schwartz, first chair of the Holocaust Committee, and distribution of student awards from the Holocaust Education Committee.

“Asylum Seekers & Refugees: Lessons from the Holocaust,” is the theme for this year’s memorial service and guest speaker Dr. John Saunders will share his story about how he survived 5 concentration camps.

There will be a reception following the program, giving attendees a chance to meet the speaker and view student projects.
