Councilor Joseph Lopes – ward 6
Councilor Lopes was elected to the New Bedford City Council on November 3, 2009, the son of John R. and Dorothy L. Lopes, married to the former Amy C. Sattler, and brother to John R. Lopes II.
A life long resident of New Bedford, and the great grandson of Portuguese immigrants who relocated to the United States from Portugal. I am proud to say that I graduated from the New Bedford Public School, after graduation I attended and graduated from Bristol Community College majoring in Business Management, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth where I earned a Bachelors of Arts Degree in Political Science, and Johnson and Wales University where I earned my Master in Business Administration with a concentration in International Business.
COMMITTEE MEMBERSHIPS: Currently serving on, or is the chair of the following City Council Committees for 2010; Chair of Veterans Affairs, Elderly, Health, Housing & Disability Issues and Energy, Vice – Chair of the City Council – Special Committee on Memorials and Dedications, member of the Gaming/Casinos, Environmental Affairs, and School Traffic Committee; a working member of the committees on Appointments and Briefings, City Property, Finance, Internal Affairs, Labor and Industry, Ordinances and Public Safety and Neighborhoods.
In addition to City Council duties I am an active member in several local community organizations, currently a member of the Cove Street, Goulart Square, and Clark’s Point Neighbor Association, Vice Chair of the Ward Six Democratic Committee, SMILES Mentoring, Assistant Youth Soccer Coach, United Way of Greater New Bedford Committee Member, Board Member of the Fort Tabor/Fort Rodman Military Museum, Board Member of South end Business Association, and a Board Member of Save the Orpheum Theater, and an Operation Clean Up Volunteer.
