Councillor Steven Martins was elected to the New Bedford City Council on November 6, 2007 in his first run for public office. He is one of the youngest City Councillors ever elected in New Bedford’s history. Steve, a life-long resident of New Bedford, is the son of Portuguese immigrants who relocated to the United States from Lisbon, Portugal. He was educated at Saint Anthony Elementary School and graduated from New Bedford High School. He attended Bristol Community College and went onto the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science. Steve is also a graduate of the New Bedford Citizen’s Police Academy and is a candidate at UMASS Dartmouth for his Master’s Degree in Public Policy.

In addition to his Council duties, he currently serves as Assistant Director/Regional Manager for the Massachusetts State Lottery Commission under the Massachusetts State Treasurer. Prior to his services as Assistant Director, he also served as Director of Administration for the Bristol County Retirement System, Operations Manager for the Executive Office of Labor & Workforce Development, Employment & Training Specialist, Instructor for the Mayor’s Summer Youth Program, Pathways Coordinator, Substitute Teacher for New Bedford Public Schools, Intern at the Bristol County District Attorney’s office, and a Teacher’s Assistant to the Political Science Department at UMASS Dartmouth.

In 2017, Councilor Martins was appointed Justice of the Peace by the Honorable Governor of Massachusetts and confirmed by the Massachusetts Governor’s Council.

Councillor Martins is an active member in several local community organizations. Steve is currently a member of the Brooklawn & Bullard Street Neighborhood Association, UMASS Dartmouth & Bristol Community College Alumni Board, Democratic City Committee, and serves on numerous City Council committees. Prior to his involvement, he has also served as Vice President of the Student Senate, member of the Campus Activities Board and University Conduct Board, and an Orientation Leader to the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth. He is also a volunteer for Operation Clean Sweep, Relay for Life, Jimmy Fund, Habitat for Humanity and many more organizations in and out of the community. He takes pride in being one of the most active and visible leaders in the South Coast.

Councillor Martins has been recognized for his hard work and dedication to the City of New Bedford and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts by receiving numerous awards, including being named one of the Top Young Professionals by New England Business Bulletin in 2010, 2011, and 2015. In 2016, Councilor Martins also received the Heritage Day of Portugal Award by the Massachusetts State House of Representatives for his dedication to the advancement of Portuguese-Americans throughout the Commonwealth, as well for his contributions to the New Bedford community.

Steve is fortunate to have a great family in his family life and luckily enough to have received some of his parent’s best qualities. He has mother’s empathy and ability to understand others and his father’s strong business and financial senses. Losing his father in 2012 to brain cancer at the age of 51, it’s these and many other qualities he lives by each day. Steve has a drive to succeed and advance in life, not to better him, but more to enable him to better help others.
