Port of New Bedford Sees Healthy Growth in Freight Traffic, Refrigeration Project Expected to Generate More Cargo Business

17-1New Bedford, Massachusetts- Just a few years ago freight traffic was non-existent in the Port of New Bedford, but this year nearly twenty freighters will have arrived in the Port of New Bedford by the time the season is over.

The increase in freight traffic in the Port is expected to continue to grow with the refrigeration of State Pier, a project Mayor Jon Mitchell strongly advocated for.

Mayor Jon Mitchell Unveils New City Ambulances

New Bedford, Massachusetts- New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell underscored the significance of modernizing the City’s ambulance fleet at a press conference this week and announced that New Bedford has acquired two new, state-of the-art ambulances that will enhance the department’s ability to respond to the public’s emergency needs.

New Bedford Teachers Agree to New Labor Contract

17-3In contract heralded as a ‘game changer,’ teachers supported with additional professional development time;

District gains competitive advantage in selecting new hires

New Bedford – At a press conference in New Bedford City Hall, Mayor Jon Mitchell joined with New Bedford Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Pia Durkin and leaders of the New Bedford Educators Association to announce the parties have reached a new labor contract for New Bedford teachers, subject to approval of the New Bedford School Committee.

New Bedford teachers voted to ratify the new one-year labor contract (7/1/2014-7/31/2015) which includes important changes that will support the school department’s efforts to provide teachers with additional professional development throughout the school year as well as to hire the most qualified teachers.  The contract was approved by the New Bedford School Committee on January 12, 2015… read more (PDF)

New Bedford Police Department Adds Seven New Officers

17-4New Bedford, MA – The New Bedford Police Department recently added seven new police officers to its ranks.  The new officers raise the department’s complement of officers to 263 members.  With these new officers, a total of fourteen officers will have taken the oath to serve and protect New Bedford residents this since January of 2014.
