Mayor’s Perspective
This past month we were pleased to open Custom House Square, a welcoming public park in the center of our downtown. I made this park a priority because I strongly believe that you can’t have a great city without a great downtown, and no downtown is complete without a well-designed and well-kept central green space. Think Post Office Square in Boston or Bryant Park in New York.
The idea was to create an outdoor magnet for office workers, residents, and tourists alike, and do it in a way that maintained adequate parking for restaurants and shops. City and New Bedford High School Celebrate Initiative to Boost Advanced Placement
New Bedford, Massachusetts – Mayor Jon Mitchell and Superintendent of New Bedford Public Schools Dr. Pia Durkin joined with representatives from the Massachusetts Math + Science Initiative (MMSI) to announce the start of a new initiative to increase enrollment and improve grades in Advanced Placement (AP) courses at New Bedford High School. City Opens New Park at Custom House Square
New Bedford, Massachusetts – New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell, park designer Chris Reed of Stoss Landscape Urbanism, local elected officials, and members of the Downtown New Bedford community officially opened the new urban park at Custom House Square on Thursday, September 12, 2013. The event took place on AHA! night and attendees enjoyed live music, entertainment by living statues and mimes, and games for kids with New Bedford Parks, Recreation & Beaches.
Custom House Square was redesigned as a modern urban park by nationally-recognized landscape designer Stoss Landscape Urbanism. City crews from the Department of Public Infrastructure and Department of Public Facilities completed its construction in early September…Read more (PDF)
