Superintendent of New Bedford Public Schools
Invitation to Apply

The New Bedford School Committee seeks an exceptional educational leader to accelerate the school district’s recent progress.  Five years ago, Mayor Mitchell and the school committee resolved to reinvent New Bedford Public Schools with the stated goal of elevating the achievement of all students.  Since then, the district has undergone rapid and dramatic change, marked by the recent decision of the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) to end its direct monitoring of the district after six years.  As the former DESE monitor noted at a school committee meeting this past summer, New Bedford Public Schools is “an extremely different district” than it was in 2011.

While test scores have risen in many schools and school operations have been modernized, much work lies ahead. Several schools have lagged behind, and the district still must do more to win the confidence of parents. And every school must continue to improve student outcomes.  Having made the tough decisions necessary to build a foundation for school improvement, the mayor and the school committee are unequivocally committed to furthering the reform effort.  Knowing well that rebuilding an urban school district is not an overnight exercise, the mayor and the committee seek a school leader who will develop a sustainable culture in the district to support a high-quality, customized learning environment in every classroom.  The position offers a unique opportunity for an aspiring leader in urban education who shares the mayor’s and school committee’s vision that public schools should activate the potential of every child.
