Transfer Station / Drop-Off Recycling

The Shawmut Avenue Transfer Station is located at 1103 Shawmut Avenue.  The hours are Monday through Friday from 7:30 am to 3:30 pm and Saturday from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm.  Be prepared to show your identification (which should include your current address).

Accepted Materials
METAL CANS

  • Includes aluminum and tin cans
  • Rinse
  • NO paint cans

GLASS

  • Includes clear and colored glass food and drink containers
  • Discard lids and rinse
  • Only paper labels may remain
  • No broken glass, pane glass or light bulbs
  • NO Pyrex cookware, plate glass, drinking glasses, windows, windshields, mirrors and ceramics

#1 through #7 PLASTIC CONTAINERS

  • Includes milk jugs, detergent bottles, shampoo bottles yogurt containers and water bottles
  • Discard caps and rinse bottles

RIGID PLASTICS

  • Includes broken blue bins, old laundry baskets, flower pots, buckets, toys and broken up plastic furniture
  • All items must be no larger than 2 feet by 3 feet
  • All items must be clean with no residue of any type (paint, oil, tar, dirt) etc.

NEWSPAPER AND PHONE BOOKS

  • Newspaper
  • No magazines or other paper (place with mixed paper)

MIXED PAPER

  • Includes white and colored ledger paper, paperboard (cereal boxes, shoe boxes, paper egg cartons, paper tubes etc.), white and manila envelopes with or without windows, junk mail, paperback books, folders, index cards, greeting cards, magazines, brown paper bags, phonebooks
  • NO waxed or foil-lined paper, hardcover books or wrapping paper.

CARDBOARD

  • Includes corrugated cardboard
  • Remove any packaging

TRASH

  • Large bulky items such as mattresses, couch chairs, sofas and furniture
  • Carpet, rope, glass cookware, drinking glass, windows, ceramics, plate glass
  • Paper products such as paper plates, cups, tissue paper, toweling and wax coated cardboard and other low-grade paper products which are unusable to paper mills
  • Household trash

Other items accepted are the following:

  • White goods (refrigerators, dishwashers, clothes dryers, gas or electric ovens and ranges, hot water heaters) *
  • Leaves, grass and brush (one-inch or less in diameter)
  • Waste oil
  • Oil filters
  • Lead acid batteries
  • Fluorescent lamps
  • Clothing
  • Scrap metal *
  • Nickel cadmium batteries
  • Mercury containing devices
  • Empty toner cartridges
  • Used cell phones
  • Antifreeze
  • Surplus paint
  • Propane tanks *
  • Computer monitors and televisions*
  • Aerosol containers
  • Tires – Only on Tire Recycling Days
  • Books, CD's, audio and video tapes

* Not available on Saturdays

Unacceptable Waste
The following items are not accepted at the Transfer Station:

  • Construction & demolition debris such as the waste from building material and rubble resulting from the construction, remodeling, repair or demolition of buildings or other structures. Sheetrock, lumber, wood waste.
  • Special Waste- Materials such as sewage solids, radioactive wastes, pathogenic wastes, explosive materials, chemicals liquid wastes or other material of hazardous nature or materials requiring special handling or procedures for disposal.

Transfer Station Facility Operation

    • Only material generated within the boundaries of the City of New Bedford shall be accepted at the facility.
    • Persons using the facility may be required to present documentation to demonstrate that the material was generated within the boundaries of the City.
    • All signs and verbal instruction from City personnel shall be obeyed.
    • All persons using the facility do so at their own risk.
    • Failure to obey the following regulations shall result in loss of facility privileges.
    • All vehicles using the Transfer Station must come to a full stop at the weigh scale prior to unloading and immediately following unloading, unless otherwise directed.
    • A tipping fee, as defined by the Commissioner of Public Facilities, shall be charged for all solid waste loads disposed at the Transfer Station.
    • Vehicles as identified by the vehicle registration number, shall be limited to the disposal of up to four (4) bulky items twice per year at no charge. Bulky items exceeding this quantity shall be charged at the same rate as solid waste.
    • An acceptable form of tipping fee payment shall be made at the time the waste is disposed.
    • Payment shall be made by check or credit card (Visa, MasterCard). Cash shall not be accepted.
    • All conditions subject to change
