Roadwork Notice: Paving on Mt. Pleasant Street and Rockdale Ave. during week of July 11

Beginning the week of Monday, July 11 (weather dependent), Highway Rehab. Corp and Indus, Inc., under the direction of the City of New Bedford’s Department of Public Infrastructure, will be completing roadway improvements along Mt. Pleasant Street from Route 140 to New Plainville Road, and along Rockdale Avenue from Grape Street to Cove Road.

The work will include a heater-scarifying and heater-planing process. There will be limited disruption to your property for about 1 to 2 hours as equipment completes the work and materials are allowed to cure. While working in front of your area, there will be no vehicular access in or out of the property until the equipment passes. It is expected that the heater-scarifying/ planing project will occur between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. The project for each roadway – Mt. Pleasant St. and Rockdale Ave. – is expected to take 2 to 3 days to complete.

On street parking will NOT be allowed during construction. Parking will remain on side streets. “NO PARKING” signs will be posted. Your vehicle will be towed if it is left on the roadway during the posted construction timeframe.
We appreciate your patience during this process as we work to improve these major roadways.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What can I expect during the work?
The equipment used to complete the asphalt-recycling process uses a considerable amount of heat. On occasion, this process might cause noticeable leaf discoloration; much the same that happens each fall.
This is a TEMPORARY condition that results in no permanent damage to vegetation.
Because of the high heat generated, we ask that while working on your street, you provide proper supervision of your children and pets.

Will trash service be interrupted or delayed?
No. Trash service or any other municipal service will not be interrupted because of this work. Do not leave trash barrels or other items in the roadway the day of the work.

How long will the work take to complete?
The heater-scarifying/planing project along the entire project length will be completed in 2 to 3 days. Work will only be occurring in front of your property for 1 to 2 hours and the roadway will be open to traffic.

While working in front of your property, there will be no access until the equipment passes. Police details and roadway flaggers will help direct traffic to minimize disruption.

Why is the City completing this type of project?
The City is working to improve the streets as efficiently and cost-effectively as possible to minimize disruption and maximize funding.
This type of recycling process allows a roadway to be repaired for considerable savings without compromising the strength or longevity of the asphalt, and with less disruption than more traditional paving repairs.
