Councilor Joseph Lopes – ward 6
COUNCILOR LOPES WAS first ELECTED TO THE NEW BEDFORD CITY COUNCIL ON NOVEMBER 3, 2009, and was elected the 2014 City Council President.
A life long resident of New Bedford, and a proud graduated of the New Bedford Public School, after graduation from New Bedford High School, I attended and graduated from Bristol Community College majoring in Business Management, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth where I earned my Bachelors of Arts Degree in Political Science, and a 2002 graduate of Johnson and Wales University where I earned my Master in Business Administration with a concentration in International Business.
COMMITTEE MEMBERSHIPS: Currently serving on, or has been the chair of the following City Council Committees. Chairman for Finance Committee 2015 and 2016, Chair of the Audit Committee, Chair of Veterans Affairs, the Special Committee on Fisheries, Elderly, Health, Housing & Disability Issues and Energy, Vice – Chair of the City Council – Special Committee on Memorials and Dedications, Vice Chair of City Property, member of the Gaming/Casinos, Environmental Affairs, and School Traffic Committee; a working member of the committees on Appointments and Briefings, Internal Affairs, Labor and Industry, Ordinances and Public Safety and Neighborhoods, and an appointed member of the Special Committee on Charter Review.
In addition to City Council duties I am an active member in several local community organizations, currently a member of the Cove Street, Clark’s Point Neighbor Association, Ward Six Democratic Committee, Assistant Youth Soccer and Baseball Coach, Board Member of the United Way of Greater New Bedford, Board Member of South end Business Association, and a Board Member of Save the Orpheum Theater, and an Operation Clean Up Volunteer. I am a proud member of the Prince Henry Society and the Friends Sons of New Bedford.
