New Bedford, Massachusetts– The Department of Parks, Recreation & Beaches is offering a free hands-on science family event on Thursday, April 18, 2019 as part of the New Bedford Science Café.
Join students from the NASA Solar System Explorers at Ford Middle School to explore space, science, and travel to the far reaches of the solar system and beyond on Thursday, April 18 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the New Bedford Whaling Museum, 18 Johnny Cake Hill. The event is free and no pre-registration is required.
These young scientists and NASA Solar System Ambassador, Joe Cote, will be at the New Bedford Whaling Museum to connect kids to several of the exciting projects being conducted by NASA. This New Bedford Science Café KIDS event will feature kid-friendly, hands-on activities including: handling real moon rocks, looking through a solar spotting scope, viewing images from the TESS mission to find exoplanets, learning about current exploration of the surface of Mars, and creating space crafts.
The event will begin with an informative talk from the students, followed by hands-on activities at the Meet-A-Scientist stations. Free cookies will also be provided by the New Bedford Whaling Museum.
NB Science Café KIDS is a youth-focused offshoot of New Bedford Science Café (NBSC) and a partnership formed between NBSC and New Bedford Parks, Recreation & Beaches. They coordinate the New Bedford Science Café KIDS events with various organizations which are hosted at sites throughout New Bedford.
The goal of this program is to connect students in New Bedford to scientists and their research. Events feature scientists, researchers, and local students sharing their research and provide time for hands-on activities and Q&A with the presenters. Science Cafés take place worldwide. They are informal gatherings that offer the chance for the public to question experts in a scientific field. New Bedford Science Café was launched in 2017 and has hosted monthly events designed to foster a greater appreciation of science and its enrichment of our world.
