Mayor’s Perspective: My Visit to the Second Whaling City

Second Whaling CityRecently, I travelled across the Atlantic Ocean to a small town in Ireland called Youghal. There, Youghal Mayor Sammy Revins and I signed a Twinning Agreement, officially recognizing the City of New Bedford and Youghal as Sister-Cities and cementing our communities’ strong historical and cultural ties.

Even though Youghal and the City of New Bedford are hundreds of miles apart, I found that our two coastal communities are rife with striking similarities. Youghal and New Bedford share a unique connection to Herman Melville’s Moby Dick. As I am sure you know, New Bedford is the great whaling
port described in Melville’s literary classic. In 1954, Youghal became the second home of the classic whaling story when it portrayed New Bedford in the movie version of Moby Dick… Read more (PDF)

Members of the Massachusetts Congressional Delegation and Alaska Senator Mark Begich joined Warren in the listening session to hear from representatives from the fishing and scientific communities on ways to improve federal fisheries management regulations.

Trucks, and Snow Plows Leave City Better Prepared for EmergenciesNew Bedford, Massachusetts – On October 31, 2013, Mayor Jon Mitchell joined with several city departments heads, including the Fire Chief, the Director of Emergency Medical Services, the Director of the Department of Facilities and Fleet Management as well as the Commissioner of Public Infrastructure to unveil new vehicles that will become part of the city’s fleet.
