Supportive Recreation Programs


The City of New Bedford Parks Recreation and Beaches Supportive Recreation Program is designed to provide city residents with opportunities to access high-quality active, passive and supportive recreation throughout the city’s many parks, playground, beaches. We believe recreation is a critical piece of living a healthy life and is critical in the health of a community.   All programs shall provide the opportunity for participant growth and inclusion; provide connections to healthy lifestyles, and asset building. This approach sets high standards for recreation participants and includes the opportunity to access programs that provide; education, socialization & citizenship and promote a healthy lifestyle. Programs shall:

  • Promote positive participant development: physically, socially and psychologically
  • Involve opportunities for collaboration amongst community members
  • Include the promotion of healthy lifestyles
  • Include youth and adult partnerships
  • Provide access to New Bedford’s parks and recreational opportunities
  • Promote passive and active recreation
  • Promote education through programs sponsored by a variety of governmental organizations, community- based organizations, and individuals

The Supportive Recreation Program is a variety of programs sponsored by Parks Recreation and Beaches, which engage many community partners and individual citizens in recreation opportunities. As the program grows, Parks Recreation and Beaches seeks to engage residents in the following areas of interest (not limited to the following):

  • Physical Fitness
  • Nature/Environmental Education
  • Fishing and Boating
  • After School Programs
  • Organized Sports
  • Health and Nutrition
  • Arts and Culture
  • Music and Entertainment
  • Gardening
  • Hiking and Trails
