Temporary Closure of the Special Collections Department – History Room
Please be advised that the Special Collections Department will temporarily close its reading room – the History Room – during the month of February 2016 to accommodate a reorganization of its printed collection. During this period, onsite access to the historical collection, and local and remote History Room reference services will be unavailable.
Departmental responses to telephone and email queries will resume on Tuesday, March 1 upon reopening. We regret any inconvenience caused by this closure and look forward to assisting you with your research needs in a more efficient environment.

The New Bedford Free Public Library and New Bedford Historical Society are partnering to bring author programs to the community. The first event was held on Tuesday, January 19th with author Eleanor Lopes Akahloun who shared a remarkable personal and professional journey from humble beginnings in her tightly knit Cape Verdean American community in Onset.
The next program in this series is going to be held on Tuesday, February 23th at 7:00 p.m.
Meet publisher Joseph Thomas and authors, Alfred Saulniers and Jay Avila, of the Spinner publication A Picture History of New Bedford, Volume Two – 1925-1980 will be sharing their experience in researching the text and photos for the book and offering intriguing insight on how the process went.
