September is National Library Card Sign-up Month
September is Library Card Sign-up Month – a time when the American Library Association and libraries across the country remind parents that a library card is the most important school supply of all.
The observance was launched in 1987 to meet the challenge of then Secretary of Education William J. Bennett who said: “Let’s have a national campaign…every child should obtain a library card – and use it.” Since then, thousands of public and school libraries join each fall in a national effort to ensure every child does just that.
Libraries play an important role in the education and development of children. Studies show that children who are read to in the home and who use the library perform better in school and are more likely to continue to use the library as a source of lifetime learning.
On Tuesday, September 15th at 7:00 p.m., in the 3rd floor meeting room of the New Bedford Free Public Library we will be hosting a program with WBSM radio personality, Dave Kane, also author of 41 Signs of Hope.
Mr. Kane, author of 41 Signs of Hope is the father of Nicholas O’Neill, the youngest victim of the fourth largest nightclub fire in U.S. history and in this book, he shares fascinating stories and intriguing evidence that life never ends. After receiving a barrage of signs, including vocal messages from Nicky, Mr. Kane is convinced that he has not “lost” his son. Instead he has been given the priceless gift of a loving eternal connection with his boy. After experience Mr. Kane’s uplifting presentation and seeing his evidence, you too will be assured that your loved ones who have passed are still with you.
This program is sure to be entertaining, informative and truly inspirational. This is a first in a series of local author presentations the New Bedford Library will be hosting throughout the Fall and Winter. Mr. Kane will be donating copies of his book to all five New Bedford locations.
