Brownfields Site Assessment Cleanup & Redevelopment

What is a Brownfield?

Real property, where the expansion, redevelopment, or reuse of may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant.

New Bedford has developed an ambitious program aimed at assessing, cleaning up and redeveloping Brownfields. Learn about Brownfield Sites where the City has used EPA Brownfield funding to assess, cleanup, and plan for site reuse on the Brownfields Story Map.

As a public/private partnership effort, the City of New Bedford has launched an EPA-funded Brownfields Revolving Loan Fund (RLF) to support the redevelopment of known and new Brownfield sites throughout the City by private parties. Environmental Job Training Support

In January 2020, the City was awarded a $200,000 grant from the EPA for Environmental Workforce Development and Job Training (EWDJT).  Due to COVID19, this program had a delayed start and kicked off in September 2021 with great success.  Nearly 70 community residents whom are unemployed or underemployed and over the age of 18 have completed more than 20 environmental jobs training courses including OSHA40 HAZWOPER, OSHA30 Maritime, Forklift with trench and excavation safety, Deleader Worker and Supervisor, Asbestos Worker and Supervisor, Clean Water through Green Infrastructure Certification and a Massachusetts Class 1C/2A Hoister Exam Preparation course.  All of the students received wrap-around services for these trainings from the Greater New Bedford MassHire Career Center, Old Bedford Village Development Corporation and other local community partners.
