City Plans Crack-Sealing Repairs to Local Roads

Work to Begin on Monday, July 24th

New Bedford, MA – The City’s Department of Public Infrastructure (DPI) will be doing crack-sealing work along several roads starting Monday, July 24th. The work is weather dependent, with an anticipated completion date of August 7th. This work is part of the City’s ongoing pavement preservation program that is being implemented to extend the life of roads and minimize more costly types of reconstruction methods.

Cracks come in all shapes and sizes, and no pavement is immune to cracking. If left untreated, those cracks are only the start of more significant problems, from potholes all the way to sub-base failure. Crack sealing is the process of placing an adhesive sealant into cracks on the pavement surface, preventing the infiltration of moisture and non-compressible materials into the pavement. It is an industry-accepted cost-effective pavement preservation treatment that can slow pavement deterioration and extend pavement life by three to five years.  Work will be taking place on recently paved streets as well as on older pavement to help seal joints and cracks before larger cracks form or potholes develop.

DPI, along with the paving contractor Indus Inc., will crack-seal the following streets:

  • Tallman Street – Acushnet Ave. to Belleville Ave.
  • Brook Street – Irvington St. to Nash Rd.
  • Princeton Street – Ashley Blvd. to Church St.
  • Sawyer Street – Vet. Mem. Way to Bellville Ave.
  • Bullard Street – Acushnet Ave. to Belleville Ave.
  • Hillman Street – Newton St. to Foster St.
  • Hathaway Boulevard – Rockdale Ave. to Parker St.
  • Route 18 – Elm St. to 200′ north of Griffin Ct. (JFK Phase 1)
  • Chancery Street – Smith St. to Kempton St.
  • Keene Street – Liberty St. to Chancery St.
  • Acushnet Avenue – Hillman St. to Pearl St.
  • Van Buren Street – Beacon St. to Monroe Dr.
  • Portland Street – East Rodney French to West Rodney French
  • Margin Street – Cove St. to Cove Rd.
  • Rivet Street – Bonney St. to County St.

Work will take place Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. Drivers can expect road closures and traffic delays. Work being done on specific streets will be completed in two to three hours per street with the exception of work along Route 18.
