New Bedford Cable Network Wins “Overall Excellence,” Seven Program Awards in Competition Spanning New England & New York

New Bedford, Massachusetts – New Bedford Cable Network (NBCN) won eight awards, including the top-tier “Overall Excellence,” at the annual ceremony recently held by the Northeast Chapter of the Alliance for Community Media.

In addition to the ceremony’s top award, won in a competition against cable networks across New England and New York, NBCN also won seven awards for its programs, with first-place finishes in the “General Talk Show,” “School/Education Programming,” and “Documentary” categories.

“It’s no surprise to see the talented team at New Bedford Cable Network recognized for their outstanding programming,” said Mayor Jon Mitchell. “Winning these awards against counterparts in much larger media markets validates their first-class services for the City and the region.”

The Alliance for Community Media held its “Nor-Easter Awards” virtually Nov. 11. New Bedford Cable Network winners included:

Overall Excellence Winner, NBCN (Boston Neighborhood Network and Peabody Cable were the other finalists)

PSA/Short Program, 2nd Place – “NB Counts Census Promo”  Suzanne Richard

Historical Documentary, 2nd Place – “Story of Martha Briggs Educational Club”  Ann Marie Lopes

Documentary, 1st Place – “A Cranberry Harvest”  Decas Cranberry Products, Suzanne Richard, and Jim Marshall

The New Bedford Cable Network (NBCN) operates the City of New Bedford’s Public, Educational and Government Access television channels. For New Bedford residents, Government Access is Channel 18, Educational Access is Channel 9, and Public Access is Channel 95. Professional staff have been filming and producing original programming at NBCN for twenty years. The network has received national awards for several of its productions.

 

About the Alliance for Community Media National and North East Regional Awards

Each year, the Hometown Media Awards honors and promotes community media, and local cable programs that are distributed on Public, Educational and Governmental (PEG) access cable television channels. Awards are presented to creative programs that address community needs, develop diverse community involvement, challenge conventional commercial television formats and move viewers to experience television in a different way. The mission of the Alliance for Community Media is to promote civic engagement through community media.
