Infectious diseases are illnesses caused by germs that enter the body, multiply, and can cause an infection. They are a continuous threat to public health and therefore require close monitoring. The New Bedford Health Department strives to:

  • reduce the impact of infectious diseases
  • control infectious diseases in the community
  • respond to emerging infectious disease concerns
  • create a healthier New Bedford

What We Do:

  • disease surveillance
  • case/outbreak investigation
  • promote access to care/resources
  • infectious disease prevention education
  • Tuberculosis case management and Direct Observation Therapy (DOT)
