Public Health Internship Program

 

The New Bedford Health Department’s Public Health Internship Program allows students and other individuals to gain practical learning experience by working alongside local public health professionals.

Interns receive the opportunity to apply skills learned in the classroom to real-life public health issues. Internship focus areas may include, but are not limited to, Health and Wellness Promotion, Health Equity, Environmental Health, Public Health Nursing, Medical Health Administration, and Health Communications. Interns can expand their knowledge of local public health while gaining experience serving New Bedford’s diverse community.

During their internship, interns will undertake a program-related project to prepare for a career in Public Health. The New Bedford Health Department has identified several project themes that align with priority focus areas and contribute to the department’s impact on the Greater New Bedford community.

New Bedford Health Department Projects
  1. Health communications (social media, infographics, website content)
  2. Data analysis and visualization
  3. Community engagement, health equity research, and policy recommendation
  4. Administrative support including LBOH meeting minutes, digital file organization, etc.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
Preferred Qualifications
  • College/university student focusing on health & wellness, health education, public health, health administration, or related major/program of study.
  • The ideal internship candidate is:
    • Highly motivated
    • Comfortable taking initiative and working independently, or as part of a team
    • Resourceful
    • Familiar with the Greater New Bedford community
    • Passionate about community service
    • Comfortable interacting with the public
