Hurricane Protection Barrier

Once again the New Bedford portion of the New Bedford /Fairhaven Hurricane Protection Barrier was inspected semi-annually by the Army Corps of Engineers.
The condition of the barrier and all operational features were considered by the corps to be in excellent form. All three street gates have been sand blasted and painted.
All sewer gates and fire intake gates are very well maintained, painted and ready for emergency operation. The New Bedford dike pumping station is operational, all four pumps are in excellent working condition.
The entire system is a credit to the tremendous effort of the WasteWater division crews charged with this systems maintenace. Prepartions are under way to initiate structural repairs to the systems street gates that will insure their reliability into the year 2000.
